Finding my Medieval Way with Thought and Effort

I have always had a tendency toward natural things.  I have always questioned modern methods and factory-made items.  Plastic objects such as toothbrushes, all through childhood, baffled me because I could not fathom how they could be made by hand by people, for it was obvious to me that they did not exist in nature.

So, we have come to 2025, when the world frivolously uses the internet and cell phones for the smallest bit of information.  People that I speak with, every day, cannot figure out how to simply tell me their phone number without using the electrical energy of a text, whose storage will continue to burn energy 365 days a year for years to come.  They CANNOT think how to say it or write it down.

So, in the last five years, instead of going with the very large crowd in overusing electrical energy, I have gone in the opposite direction.  I simply stop to think.  Think: how can I change habits and tasks and everyday interactions into natural, human ones?

I read maps, now.  Everywhere I go.  I ask for directions and landmarks, and when I meet someone who can give directions instead of looking them up on their phone, I have a huge amount of respect for them!

This month, I did not think I would get over the “typing on the computer” hurdle.  Since I have been teaching singing, I only see teachers that text, email, and hand out typed papers.  However, that much time on a device is so hard on a person's health and eyesight.  So, what could I do to give papers to multiple students?  A type-writer!  That would be a good option.  It would be typed, and I could make copies.  No white light.  No internet and electrical connection affecting me or the world's energy-overuse.  Hmmmm….but I don't own a type-writer yet.  Then I thought….maybe…and I started writing some papers by hand.  It works!  Then I simply make copies.  The copies don't use as much energy, and I am not affected by working on the devices.  So, this month, I type some things, but some, I thoughtfully write and copy.

And now…I am going to stop typing.  Ridiculous, really, that it takes so much imagination to think of how to do something simply.  But in 2025, I am figuring it out, and finding my natural, medieval way…with a modern twist.  (Use of our technology in small doses is a great thing!)  And I'll keep working on this; using the best of both worlds, thoughtfully with effort - two things that seem to always go in the direction against the crowd.
