If you haven't heard Texas' fiddle player Aidan Flanagan, you are missing out! He is trained in Irish fiddle, though he plays beyond traditional Irish music, and he plays guitar. I met him at O'Flaherty Irish Music Youth Camp in Texas, where he and I were instructors, and he volunteered to add fiddle to a song I was singing for everyone. Since then, I have read some of his poetry, and the man really has depth as a writer! (so, more than one talent!)
Aidan came to mind for this Monday's “Amazing Artist” because I can remember seeing him on stage and thinking that it can't get better! “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” (which I now know is by The Charlie Daniels Band) is actually one of my favorite songs - one I occasionally catch on the radio while driving - and watching Aidan play the song was so much fun! He looks like a fiddle player to the core playing it, but I'm sure he has lots of his own favorite songs.
Where is a good place to hear Aidan Flanagan? Go for the recently recorded LIVE ALBUM he recorded with the band River Driver. He's not currently touring with the band, as they made the album near the end of their performances together, but that's why it's great to have the album! River Driver's music is online, and if you go out to a performance, you can get a CD in person. (They are at Decatur Celtic Festival this weekend.)
Aidan makes it all look easy, and he loves playing music, and I think he is a great fiddle player.
