Finally, this month I carved out some designs on my shruti box, and I added green-colored stains into the lines. I was able to put my new music design onto the the front by making a stencil first. Love how that turned out!
I did not have the wood to sample colors, so I used a spare piece of wood flooring, which is maple and a much lighter wood, to test colors. As expected, the colors were better on the maple - every color popped! Only the dark green contrasted enough with the dark wood grain on my shruti box. And that's okay. I knew I wanted greens, and those soaked right into the wood so gorgeously.
I freehanded my name after drawing a few samples for the lettering and what I wanted it to look like.
And last, on the front, I wrote “amhrán,” the Irish word for “song,” with early Irish lettering from the Ogham.
I'll have to update the blog with all of the colored finishes because I haven't taken pictures of it, and I am still adding more symbols to the back and sides. Just love it! This is a shruti box I love to play now, and you can see these finished desgins on the online concert tomorrow (Sunday, 4/30/23) - a collaboration with Classical Crossover Magazine - “Songs From Many Lands” concert. The concert information is here: https://classicalcrossovermagazine.us/songs-from-many-lands-premieres-april-30th/
I'll be adding more artwork to my “Misty-shruti box” soon.
